PREVIEW: Global Roots presents Owiny Sigoma Band

PREVIEW: Global Roots presents Owiny Sigoma Band
Rhemayo Brooks

This Thursday, Thris Tian (Boiler Room purveyor, NTS Radio mainstay and exponent of a contemporary global soundtrack) will throw his first Global Roots event.

He has used his weekly ‘Dark N’ Lovely Global Roots’ show on NTS (Sunday nights), to introduce listeners to a wealth of sounds that would be oft missed, even by the keenest ears. From Kenyan Techno to Brazilian Disco, Dark N’ Lovely’ showcases it all, but on August 1st it is the former that takes centre stage, with Owiny Sigoma Band headlining a night that promises to put some rhythm into the most brittle of hips.

After the Spring release of their 2nd album Power Punch, Owiny Sigoma Band arrive at Village Underground, fresh from touring with Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace, to lend their innovative blend of Kenyan folk and British electronica to the evening’s proceedings. They have already had concert halls across Europe bouncing to the distinctive bleeps and slaps of Nyiduonge Drums, so God knows what will happen if/when this drops on Thursday…

Djing alongside Thris Tian is the ebullient Glaswegian Auntie Flo and Skinny Macho’s alias Blackfoot Phoenix, offering their contributory hand to what promises to be a musically rambunctious night.

To get you in the mood, Thris Tian’s delivered an incredible, wide-ranging mix of African music, from abstract afrofuturism from the likes of King Britt, to the shuffling kwaito-house of Durban crew Big Nuz.

Highly recommended!
