Having appeared on a slew of high-profile labels in recent years including Gerd Janson’s Running Back, Tamed Musiq and Ostgut Ton, English-born Berlin resident Matthew Styles draws influence from a melting pot of sound both in his productions and in his live sets. We caught the producer just before another busy summer of festival activity – Crotia’s Hideout the pick of the bunch – and he gave us a snapshot selection of the heavy hitters you can expect to hear him dropping out in the Adriatic. Taking us back to the very origins of house music as we know it!

We started going on family holidays every year for a month to 6 weeks to the US around ’83/’84. My Dad was interested in picking up all the latest dance releases there, I was about 7 years old and after seeing the film ‘Breakdance’ and the help of my older sister I had become obsessed with the music and this crazy stuff from the US.

A few years later those early house sounds started to infiltrate the UK charts, could have been a number of records, S-Express, Bomb the Bass, Royal House…. Someone asked me ‘at what point did I discover dance music?’. But I think if you grew up in the UK in the 80s or 90s you didn’t have to discover it, it was and still is part of the culture.

 

Underground Solution – Luv Dancin’

When I really started collecting house records about ’93 I had a much older friend who guided me a bit towards the deeper US sound – Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, MAW, Humphries, Bobby Konders etc…. This is still one of the best records of the era and never fails to move a room. Such a great energy.
