Fred P remixes Cassy and Demuir on Kwench Records

Fred P remixes Cassy and Demuir on Kwench Records

Around midday this past Sunday afternoon, as a hum of anticipation filled the heaving Panorama Bar dancefloor, Cassy entered the Berlin venue’s fabled booth for the umpteenth time. Gliding in with trademark humility, she embraced fellow resident Tama Sumo in a tender exchange of words and headphones, and got down to business.

Though these days she doesn’t play her old haunt quite as often as she used to – now just a few times a year rather than the once monthly gig she held for three years back in 2004 – Cassy’s tour schedule has been healthier than ever in 2017, having laid it down everywhere from Houghton to Hï Ibiza.

Last month, she launched Kwench Records, a new conceptual label designed to house her own productions, created alongside a series of close collaborators. The first 12″ saw her team up with Toronto’s Demuir on a trio of turbulent tweakers – the A-side of which, ‘Stand Up (Your Life)’, tore the roof off Pbar on the weekend.

Cassy initially enlisted the transcendental talents of Fred P for a remix, but the prolific New York native instead turned in three vastly varied compositions, which Cassy subsequently demanded have their very own release – and so was born the second EP.

Both the ethereal ‘Journey Mix’ and mystical ‘Broken Vibes Mix’ exhibit Fred’s deeply emotive search for meaning through interlocking harmony and subtleties in space, while the slick 4×4 groove of the ‘Fixation Mix’ originates from the physically-minded fringes of his output. It exudes a versatility that few can accomplish and even fewer can master, but such is the dexterity of Fred P – an inspired choice to close off a healthy end to the year for Cassy and Kwench.
