Five Essentials: Alix Perez
Proving there’s more to come out of Belgium than just chocolate, waffles and beer, Belgian-born Alix Perez, the highly sought after producer-DJ with a penchant for eschewing electronica traditions, is the most musically exciting entity to emerge from the country since the saxophone.
With an uncanny ability to move you in all senses of the word, Alix Perez’s most recent productions run the gamut from the deep and meditative – the ‘Recall & Reflect’ EP released on Exit Records springs to mind – to the down right dirty; the face-melting ‘Shades’ EP released on Alpha Pup Records fitting that particular bill.
2016 starts apace for Perez with a collaboration with forward-facing London trio Ivy Lab teased, a slew of gigs announced and a whole year gone by cigarette-free. Not entirely relevant but well worth a mention. Ex-smokers will understand.
You can catch Perez doing his thing live in the Bass capital of the UK when the mighty MUTINY takes over Bristol’s Motion for a celebration of 18 years of Drum & Bass. In what’s looking set to be one of the series’ rowdiest events, Perez will be showing off his considerable skills alongside the likes of Calyx & Teebee, Ed Rush, S.P.Y and a whole host of other D&B heroes.
Whilst you pick up your collective jaws from the floor and mull over that monstrous line-up, we are proud to present Alix Perez’s Five Essentials for your aural delight. Listen in and try to contain yourself.
Here’s to you, Mr. Perez. We raise an exquisite Belgian beer in your honour. Cheers!
Break – Flux – Symmetry
If I had to pick a recent peak hour Drum and Bass roller then this would be it. Break has always been on top of his game when it comes to minimal rolling affairs. This is no different, it’s a dance-floor killer without the non-sense.
Alix Perez & SpectraSoul Ft Peven Everett – Forsaken (Calibre Remix) – Shogun Audio
There could only be one person to remix this track of ours, as we all agreed and that is Calibre. Dominic delivered as usual and injected his flawless touch.
Noisia & Ivy Lab – Possession – Division
Tech meets Halftime. It pretty much does what it says on the tin. Noisia warped basslines with some Ivy lab looseness on the drums. This is proof that ‘less equals more’, the sparseness of this track is where lies the backbone and groove. This will be on regular rotation.
Mr Carmack – Solutions Ft. Donnis – Bandcamp
I’m into pretty much everything that this guy touches. When it comes to 808 bangers, he sure knows how to apply himself and this is no exception. It’s been my sets for a good while now and will probably stay like that for the foreseeable.
Alix Perez & Skeptical – Elephant Dreams – ?
Something unreleased and forthcoming here from Skeptical and I. Look out for something in the near future from both of us on a new project that will surface mid-2016. This one has been going down really well in the clubs. A soulful and hypnotising track, yet effective on the dance-floor.
Alix Perez plays Mutiny @ Motion Bristol Friday 22nd January alongside Calyx & Teebee, Ed Rush, S.P.Y, and more. For tickets visit Motion’s official website.
