UE.26: Cottam
This week, it’s our great pleasure to present a guest mix from chugging house specialist, Cottam.
Paul Cottam burst onto the scene in 2009 behind a veil of anonymity, with a trio of untitled EPs showcasing groovy, bass-heavy tendencies that sauntered around the 110bpm mark. The second and most effective of those EPs consisted of two sterling 10-minute edits of Angie Stone and Bola Johnson respectively, aptly displaying the two key styles he so often references in his productions; that is, Stateside soul and West African highlife and afrobeat. That one now fetches a casual £90 on Discogs without so much of a whisper, evidence of heads’ appreciation for the understated subtleties of his interpretations.
With significant public intrigue successfully generated, that veil has since been lifted as he’s continued putting out cuts of self-proclaimed ‘sub-aquatic acid house’ to critical acclaim. Whether it be his warm and techy solo material or his eulogised reworks, Cottam’s accrued a strong catalogue of releases on Aus Music, Delusions of Grandeur, FINA and more recently his own Ruff Draft imprint.
Following a recent stint of illness that rendered him inactive, this two hour mix signals Cottam’s return to the decks and his trademark slow-burning style as he weaves a magnificent blend of hip-hop, neo-soul and slo-mo house.
